Leighton Road Surgery
- Leighton Road Surgery
Leighton Road Surgery is a friendly, well organised training Practice. We are located in the semi-rural town of Leighton Buzzard which has excellent commuter links to London and Milton Keynes and is situated on the border of Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. We are therefore ideally located to refer to Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, Milton Keynes University Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The Surgery holds a GMS contract with Bedfordshire CCG and we are the largest Practice in the area covering over 21,500 patients. Our patient population is varied having many young families but also serving a growing elderly population. The town and surrounding villages are fairly affluent with some pockets of deprivation giving way to varied presentations and pathologies. We are a high QOF achieving Practice - last year being just short of 100%.
Our team is growing with over 60 members. With this comes a specialist skill set including Nurses who have an interest in long term conditions and Doctors who specialise in areas ranging from Rheumatology to Gynaecology. We have 3 Partners and numerous salaried doctors.
Training and education are paramount to us second only to excellent patient care.
We have 2 trainers but our entire team gets involved with tutorials and the supervision of Registrars. We accept VTS trainees from Milton Keynes and Aylesbury and Medical students from UCL and Buckingham University.
We pride ourselves on being a Practice that is committed to the development of our staff. We have lunch time meetings to discuss cases, referrals, have a chit chat and eat! CPD time is factored into the timetable.
We are a very innovative Practice, always thinking of ways to improve and enhance our services. We are currently taking part in the Clinical Pharmacist Pilot and are very involved in clinical trials through our local Research Network.
We thrive to ease the workload of our GPs by using our non-clinical staff to manage correspondence, summarising, completion of insurance forms, tasks from blood results etc where appropriate. This gives the clinicians’ time to manage patients and maintain a healthy work-life balance. We also use our IT system and knowledge of SystmOne to our advantage, maximising the use of integrated templates and referral forms and striving to be as paper light as possible
We currently have 2 sites - the smaller one accommodates our very popular daily drop in blood clinics as well as our sexual health and minor ops clinics. All our routine clinics, duty team and minor illness nurses operate from our larger site. In addition we host the Bedfordshire Wellbeing Service, Counselling, the Midwifery Hub for the locality, Community Diabetes clinics and Sphere / THT / Brooks (sexual health).
