Editor, British Journal of General Practice

The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation solely for GPs in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1952, it has over 54,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

The BJGP is an international journal publishing research, editorials, analysis, and clinical guidance for family practitioners and primary care researchers worldwide, and with an impact factor for 2019 of 4.190, it is one of the leading journals in primary care research worldwide. The Editor is responsible for the peer review process, commissioning, and acceptance decisions of all material in the BJGP and leading the production and promotion of the BJGP, and its associated activities including the BJGP Research Conference, BJGP Life, and its multimedia outputs. The Editor also has strategic oversight of the BJGP brand, including the BJGP, BJGP Open, and the BJGP Research Conference, and other future publishing initiatives.

The candidate will be a member of the RCGP in good standing with a current or recent licence to practise in good standing and no limitations on practice. They will possess a wide-ranging and detailed knowledge of primary care research and medical journal editing, including significant experience of assessing clinical research manuscripts and the peer review process; an understanding of journal publishing processes, including multimedia publishing; as well as an in-depth knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities facing general practice and primary care, including research and teaching.

Key responsibilities include:

  • assuming editorial responsibility for the entire content of BJGP including line management of the BJGP Deputy Editor, and Associate Editors.
  • ensuring the effective organisation, production, and promotion of BJGP and the BJGP Research Conference.
  • identifying new developments in publishing and transformative technologies and advising the College on their significance.
  • working collaboratively to enhance the journal publishing strategy and BJGP’s scope and vision, and initiate new activities and projects.

The successful candidate will possess the MRCGP or FRCGP (essential) and a relevant postgraduate qualification to PhD or equivalent (desirable).
