Research Team Member, Junior International Committee

Do you have a passion for primary care and global health research?

The Royal College of General Practitioners represents and supports over 53,000 hardworking and dedicated family doctors in delivering quality care to patients.

The RCGP Junior International Committee (JIC) was formed in April 2009 with an exciting objective to facilitate the involvement of GP trainees and First5 GPs in educational international activities related to primary care. The JIC represents the UK in the European Vasco da Gama Movement (VdGM) (www.vdgm.eu) and works in collaboration with the RCGP Associates in Training (AiT) Committee and First5 network. We believe that research is a key aspect of international primary care with a keen interest to promote global health research opportunities.

The JIC is looking for an enthusiastic AiT/First5 member with a passion for international primary care to join the Research team of our Core Committee. This is the perfect opportunity to engage with other AiTs/First5s from the UK, Europe and around the world, whilst contributing to today’s research.

  • work with the VdGM team to co-ordinate nominations for the annual VdGM Junior Researcher Award & Promising Researcher Award.
  • encourage GP trainees and young GPs to submit and publish research in the UK at local, national and international level.
  • design, deliver and participate in WONCA Europe and RCGPAC Conference workshops/ oral presentations/posters as well as coordinating, reviewing and supporting submissions across the JIC.
  • conduct regular Skype meetings with the Education and Training group and other interested GP trainees and First5 GPs to support and facilitate the development of proposals, and conducting and writing up of research relevant to the JIC.
  • provide regular JIC 'bites' - short summaries of relevant research, policy, knowledge, projects and skills of likely interest to young GPs interested in primary care for distribution through our social media and other channels every 2-3 weeks.
  • develop links with SAPC and RCGP through the Special Interest Group ‘Research and Development in Resource-Poor Countries’.
  • support other JIC members in the evaluation, presentation and distribution of the committee's successes and activities, including taking a leading role in monitoring and evaluating the work of the committee for use both within the committee and sharing with external stakeholders
  • support other JIC members to increase the visibility and impact of the JIC through support, coordination and feedback on conference presentations, and increasing frequency of publications including both peer-reviewed articles and blogs, book reviews and opinion pieces
  • help maintain an active network for early-career GPs in Europe interested in research in Primary Care, liaising with the VdGM Research group
  • develop new collaborations with International researchers in Primary care (starting with Japan)
  • adhere to the relevant policies and procedures of RCGP, including our Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity, Data Protection and Confidentiality policies
