The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation solely for GPs in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1952, it has over 52,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

The BJGP is an international journal publishing research, editorials, debate and analysis, and clinical guidance for family practitioners and primary care researchers worldwide. The journal is sent to over 50,000 clinicians and researchers each month and its impact factor for 2018 is 4.434, top of the primary care rankings. The Editor is responsible for the peer review process, commissioning, and acceptance of all material of the BJGP and takes a lead in the production, promotion, and strategic development of the BJGP, BJGP Open, and the BJGP Research Conference.

The candidate will be a member of the RCGP in good standing and have been in active clinical practice as a GP within the past 3 years. They will possess a wide-ranging and detailed knowledge of primary care research, writing, and peer review, and an understanding of journal publishing processes, as well as an in-depth knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities facing general practice and primary care, including research and teaching.

Key responsibilities include:
• assuming editorial responsibility for the entire content of BJGP and BJGP Open.
• ensuring the effective organisation, production, and promotion of BJGP, BJGP Open, and the BJGP Research Conference.
• providing strategic clinical leadership for the RCGP’s journal publishing programme.
• identifying new developments in publishing and advising the College on their significance.


The successful candidate will hold the MRCGP or an equivalent postgraduate medical qualification and will share our corporate values. In return, the College offers excellent terms and conditions.
