International Programme Board – Lay Member (non-clinician)

We have an exciting growth strategy shaping the impact and influence of our global services for primary care and family medicine globally. As member of the International Programme Board you will offer expert advice and a lay perspective to support the delivery of the RCGP Strategic Plan 2017-2020 “Great Doctors Great Care” and 10-Year International Strategy 2011- 2021.

What does the role involve?

  • Attend IPB meetings (3-4 half-day meetings a year) either in person or by teleconference / video link.
  • Review papers and offer expert advice and a non-clinical / lay perspective on issues on the agenda relating to international strategy, policy and operational delivery of RCGP’s international work within the context of primary care / family medicine.
  •  Occasionally produce evidence-based papers for IPB offering expert advice and guidance on matters relating to international primary care / family medicine / global health.
  • Support IPB in delivering the RCGP Strategic Plan 2017-2020 “Great Doctors Great Care” and 10-Year International Strategy 2011-2021.
  • Act in the interests of RCGP and in line with College views, principles and policies.

What skills and qualities do you need?

  • extensive and recent experience working in an international policy, governance, healthcare or charitable environment.
  • an up-to-date understanding of key issues and developments in international primary care / family medicine / global health.
  • demonstrable ability to understand complex policy and strategy-related issues within a global health context and arguments and offer evidence-based justifiable and dependable advice on those issues either verbally or by producing papers.
  • awareness of the RCGP’s strategic priorities (International Strategy and Strategic Plan).
  • evidence of active participation in international clinical, developmental or educational projects.
  • proven ability to work well in a team with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • evidence of achievement, commitment and initiative.
  • tact and diplomacy.
  • willingness to commit to a voluntary role.
  • a good understanding and awareness of cultural differences and cross-cultural communication.
  • good negotiating and influencing skills.
  • excellent critical and analytical skills.
  • excellent communication skills and an ability to convey complex arguments and issues in a clear, concise and evidence-based manner.
  • adhere to the relevant policies and procedures of RCGP, including our Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity, Data Protection and Confidentiality policies
