Accountable to:
International Medical Director, Overall Head of International and Assistant Director, Head of International Programmes and Administration and Clinical Lead for Myanmar.
Term of office:
We are recruiting GP Trainers to join a team who are working on a number of projects in Myanmar. The term of office will depend upon the project and its funding source. Commitment may vary from online training courses on a monthly basis or single visits of one to three weeks (e.g. to deliver a specific training course) or an on-going commitment over a number of years with occasional visits and development work through emails and Zoom calls in between (e.g. to support the development of quality initiatives)
Overall purpose:
The appointed GP trainers will join an existing volunteer team, which is supporting primary care developments in Myanmar partnered with GP Education, Myanmar.
Remuneration:
This role is voluntary/pro bono, and no remuneration for time, professional fees or locum cover is available. Expenses including flights, accommodation, subsistence for agreed activities, in line with the current RCGP Travel and Expense Policy and when donor funding is available. RCGP travel, health and life insurance will be available for international travel as and when agreed.
Expected Start:
Applications by 7 February 2025. Shortlisting and interviews will occur during February/March 2025 with a view to joining the team in mid-March 2025.
Due to the rapidly changing situation in Myanmar, specific roles may become available at short notice.
Background:
Since 2014 self-funded volunteers from RCGP East Anglia and Thames Valley Faculties have been travelling to Myanmar in collaboration with the GP Society, Myanmar Medical Association. These Faculties have hosted Myanmar GPs travelling to the UK supported by RCGP International Travel Scholarships and the Dawn Aung San Suu Kyi Foundation. The visits have supported the development of a cadre of Myanmar GPs with an understanding of areas such as training, clinical governance and quality improvement.
In country RCGP activities have included Training of Trainers courses, keynote addresses at national conferences, meetings with ministers, clinical governance workshops, consultation skills training and reviews of curricula and assessment methodologies. Some of this work has been undertaken in conjunction with other organisations such as Boston University.
Many GPs from Myanmar have visited RCGP in London on several occasions. Funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through Global Health Partnerships (formally Tropical Health Education Trust, THET) has been secured for Myanmar activities. The volunteer group now has members from all around this country.
Much of the work has gone online since the pandemic and the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021. The work on the Myanmar Thai border still includes 6 monthly visits.
Responsibilities:
Current activities include:
- An expanding Quality Improvement (QI) programme for GPs
- A monthly webinar on clinical or organisational topics relevant to GPs
- Development of an RCGP Training of the QI Trainer Course
- Consultation Skills Training
- Standard setting and quality assurance of training in Telekyamar (Telemedicine)
- Support for the development of Continuing Medical Education
- Quality Improvements training in health care in Myanmar/Thai border areas
- Quality Improvement training with the Chindwin Medical and Humanitarian Network
- Development of a Postgraduate Certificate of General Practice for Myanmar GPs
You would be expected to:
- Undertake any necessary preparatory work prior to the online training or visit such as communication with other trainers, RCGP International and key stakeholders in Myanmar, reading of key materials or undertaking any initial training needs assessments required before the course or visit.
- Be familiar with, and keep up to date with the local demographic and political context of primary care services and Family Medicine in Myanmar.
Person specification:
Criteria
- Essential: A clinician, preferably active or within a few years of retirement and in good standing with the RCGP and GMC
- Essential: A current GP Trainer, GP tutor, Appraiser, programme director, Associate GP Dean or similar
- Essential: Excellent communication skills
- Essential: Ability to work as a team
- Desirable: Experience of Postgraduate level education
- Desirable: Experience of teaching to an International audience whose native language may not be English, often through translators
- Desirable: Previous experience of working internationally
- Desirable: An understanding of the Myanmar health system
- Desirable: An ability to speak Burmese.
