About The Role

As one of the GP’s at HMP Five Wells, you’ll provide clinical oversight across a challenging, yet demanding patient group, in a brand new custodial environment. You will be pivotal in engaging the clinical workforce to support the delivery of the organisation’s objectives, and will have the chance to further develop your clinical and medical skills. We recognise training and development is key, therefore we utilise our training centre to facilitate your needs. You will gain insight and training in Mental Health and Substance Misuse.

This is an amazing opportunity to lead a truly integrated team who will deliver outstanding patient care. As the GP, you’ll support the Head of Healthcare in shaping the policies and strategies for developing and modernising clinical practice in order to ensure high quality, safe and appropriate healthcare services for our patients.

Due to the size of the prison, we are looking to recruit a team of GP’s to support clinical alongside a wide clinical team including primary care nurses, mental health professionals and substance misuse experts. You will work as part of this multidisciplinary team to manage complex patients and get involved with using new technologies (like telemedicine) to improve care to the population. Whether you are wanting to work a few sessions as part of your portfolio work, or interesting in working for us full time, we would welcome you getting in touch with us. We are able to offer sessions during the main working week, but also in the evenings and also at the weekend, to fit around the existing commitments you may have. 

If you are new to offender health, we will create a suitable induction package to ensure you are equipped for this exciting role. In this high profile, exciting role, you will create a positive and diverse working environment leading on a number of critical areas as the prison is mobilised and subsequently opened:

About You

The GP for HMP Five Wells will be MBChB or MBBS qualified, you’ll also be registered with the GMC and on the NHS England performers list and Medical Performers List. RCGP1 part 1 is desirable.

- A salary of up to £110,000 per annum for 40 hours per week. Sessions include evenings and weekends and can be discussed at interview

HMP Five Wells is a new establishment which began receiving patients from January 2022. It is a Category C resettlement men’s prison which will have an operational capacity of 1,680 by November 2022. HMP Five Wells is based in Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. It is approximately 30 minutes from Bedford, 20 minutes from Northampton and 35 minutes north of Milton Keynes by car. Healthcare operates 7 days a week therefore you will be required to work weekends depending on your position.
