Medical Support Worker at the Northwest MSW programme and Mentorship scheme
The Medical Support Worker (MSW) role was created as part of a national drive to recruit more Health Care professionals during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was quickly recognised that the MSW position also enables refugee, asylum and IMG doctors to gain experience within the NHS whilst studying for their PLAB exams to gain GMC qualification and aid the growing demand placed upon our workforce.
As these doctors are not GMC registered there are restrictions to their practice, including the inability to prescribe or order x-rays and other imaging with ionising radiation. The MSW can undertake a range of essential and routine tasks under the supervision of the Healthcare practitioner in charge of the clinical area.
We currently have a pool of over 60 asylum, refugee and IMG doctors in the Northwest, many of whom were practicing GPs. We have organised MSW positions from 6 months to 1 year duration within GP practices in the Northwest. Within the surgeries, each MSW has a clinical supervisor, but we are seeking mentors to provide career advice. These MSW doctors have a range of experience, but have very limited exposure to the NHS. We are looking for mentors to provide help with portfolio development, CV writing, understanding career options, how to complete audits and QIPs and life as a GP in the UK. We are looking for mentors in who feel they can give a couple of hours each month to our MSW doctors. Each mentor will have between 1- 4 MSW doctors and we can provide renumeration for their time (£500 per 6 months).
If anyone feels they can give their time, or has any questions, please contact our programme lead Dr Rachel Saunders – Rachel.firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include a short summary about yourself and your specialty.
