HMP Lewes is a local category B men’s prison for those on remand to local courts as well as those who have been sentenced and those awaiting release. With an operational capacity of 692, HMP Lewes is based in Lewes in East Sussex, within the South Downs National Park. It’s approximately 25 minutes from Brighton and Hove, 35 minutes of Eastbourne and Worthing by car.

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and is a historical and picturesque town only 6 miles from Brighton and it’s beaches. There is plenty to explore in the local area with Lewes Castle and Lewes Priory nearby – in fact Lewes Prison itself is considered a historical building of interest!

What do we need from you so you can do the job?

As a member of the multi-disciplinary team, you’ll provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patient’s requirements and make timely decisions regarding future management. You will also provide a highly specialist resource to other healthcare staff, patients and carers and have active involvement in clinical governance/effectiveness activities.

We need you to be a clinical leader and guide and direct patient care from the healthcare teams.  In return we will give you balance between clinic time and time for focus on strategies and maintaining oversight of the clinical aspects of the department. The healthcare team at Lewes work in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary way and your role will be to continue to empower the healthcare team to take responsibility in leading on patient care.

You will be working alongside other General Practitioners who work in the prison with established local, regional and national support networks in place including regular one to ones and GP forums. 

It doesn’t end there; you will have a chance to become actively involved in audit, teaching and training (management of substance misuse and/or blood borne viruses) as well as helping us to adapt the service to the ever-changing needs of the patients.

We could give you the opportunity to develop in to a specialist role of your interest and benefit to the service i.e. BBV, sexual health, RCGP 1 and 2.

In return for the hard work you do, you will...

Receive an annual salary of up to £120,000 FTE per annum - depending on experience and number of sessions worked. You'll also get a number of benefits including a company contributory pension scheme, 25 days annual leave plus 8 public bank holidays pro-rata, plus CPD, study leave, re-validation support.
FTE equates to 40 hours per week, which is equivalent to 10 sessions a week. Bank contracts are also available.
