The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation solely for GPs in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1952, it has over 54,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

We are now recruiting for a new Medical Director to lead the RCGP's Primary Care Development programme.

Primary Care Development (PCD) is the College's successful general practice consultancy and has been operating since 2014. The PCD programme provides a wide range of services from supporting practices to meet requirements following a CQC inspection, to coaching, to PCN workforce development, to bespoke quality improvement packages. This is an exciting and meaningful role working closely with and managing an excellent team of experienced clinical and non-clinical advisers. This role will also contribute to shaping the PCD programme to support the needs of general practice within a changing NHS. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about general practice, with excellent leadership ability and able to think strategically across a practice, PCN and system level.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintaining quality standards of the Primary Care Development Programme's outputs and delivery.
  • Managing a team of four Deputy Clinical Leads and a network of 50 national PCD advisers
  • Developing relationships with PCNs, ICSs and practices
  • Developing forward-looking strategies to expand the programme's reach and impact in supporting general practice
  • Evaluating the programme
  • Representing the PCD programme at relevant external meetings and conferences

The successful candidate will be an RCGP member or Fellow in good standing, on the GMC register with a licence to practice and have been in active clinical practice within the past two years. The successful candidate will share our corporate values. In return, the College offers excellent terms and conditions.
