The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation solely for GPs in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1952, it has over 54,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills and promoting general practice as a discipline. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

The BJGP is an international journal publishing research, editorials, analysis, and clinical guidance for family practitioners and primary care researchers worldwide, and with an impact factor for 2020 of 5.386, it is the leading journal in primary care research worldwide. The Digital Editor, working with the Editor and the Editorial team, is responsible for creating, commissioning, and developing material to raise the digital profile of the BJGP. This includes acceptance of material for BJGPLife.com and its associated multimedia outputs as well as videos, podcasts, and social media. The Digital Editor will have a key role in building engagement with the primary care community via the BJGP digital outputs.

The candidate will possess a wide-ranging and detailed knowledge of primary care and medical editing, including multimedia publishing, such as videos and podcasts, as well as a thorough understanding of clinical and policy issues pertinent to primary care. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • To commission, create, compile, and publish engaging and relevant content on BJGPLife.com, and to liaise with the Editor about selection of appropriate articles and content for subsequent publication in BJGP’s Life & Times section.
  • In liaison with the Editor and the BJGP team, to create, edit, and produce associated multimedia content, including videos and podcasts.
  • To work collaboratively with the Editorial Staff team on the promotion of content via BJGP’s social media platforms and to build engagement across existing and future social media platforms.
