What is involved in an Editorial Fellowship?

We are offering a 6-month Editorial Fellowship to get involved in medical editing, peer review, and journal production. The fellow will gain experience in all aspects of medical journal work across both the BJGP and BJGP Open. You will actively participate in our peer-review processes, manuscript decisions, strategic planning meetings, editorial board meetings and have the opportunity to contribute to the journals. You will follow manuscripts from submission through to publication and learn how to write press statements, article summaries and highlights.

You will also have the opportunity to work with our digital platforms including the commissioning, curating and editing of multimedia content for BJGP Life. Depending on your area of interest we will work with you to develop a personalised project for completion within the fellowship. This can range from developing and creating new digital content, social media initiatives, projects to recruit reviewers or research into aspects of publication science. Previous fellows have published their research projects in peer-review journals and presented work at international conferences.

Who is eligible?

You will need to have an interest in medical publishing and/or some clinical experience in primary care as a medical student, GP trainee or early career GP. This post is most suited to GP trainees, Academic Clinical Fellowship post (ACF), and non-clinical PhD students who are considering a career in medical publishing or would like to learn more about the publishing process as early primary care researchers.

Other requirements include strong written and spoken English language skills, and the ability to work well in a long-distance team environment.

Time commitment and pay?

This is a part-time post to fit alongside clinical, research, or university commitments. The initial contract will be for 6 months but there may be an option to extend for a further 6 months, dependent on funding. The successful applicant will be contracted for 1 session per week — typically 4 hours of work per week. This post is paid pro-rata at £33,345 per annum putting it line with junior doctor payscales.
