I am Dr Gitte Wieneke, Principal Partner at Marino Medical a GP practice based in Bantry, West Cork, Ireland. We are recruiting GP’s and have had good experience attracting and retaining GPs who have relocated from the UK to Ireland.    Here’s why….

Doctors: Paul, Dirk and Allan made the decision to leave their busy UK practices and were in search of more than just a career change. They wanted a better quality of life, greater professional autonomy, and a deeper connection with their patients. Today, all agree that the move has exceeded their expectations.

For Dr.Allan a GP with a passion for outdoor activities, West Cork’s stunning surroundings was a major draw.   “I was spending hours commuting in the UK,” he recalls. “Here, my drive to work takes 10 minutes, often along breath taking coastal roads. I finally have the time and energy to enjoy hiking, kayaking, and exploring the beautiful countryside.” He mentions reclaiming his evenings, going to the cinema, attending music concerts. Allan is now even part of the local coast guard team!   He notes “ systems were different to the UK but with the support of colleagues and staff it was easy to navigate this change”.

Dr. Paul, a seasoned GP with over 20 years of experience, relocated 10 years ago. He was drawn to the self-governance and collegiality offered by the practice. “In the UK, I often felt like a cog in a massive machine,” he explains. “Here, I have a say in how the practice operates, was partner within a year and I work alongside a longstanding, happy team, supporting one another and have access to hospital based colleagues who are happy to ‘take a call’. Appointments are 15-30 mins, much more satisfying for doctors and patients. The relaxed atmosphere has reminded me why I became a doctor in the first place.” He’s also embraced the close, friendly relationships with patients, something he felt was increasingly absent in the UK. “In West Cork, you’re part of the community - you really get to know the people you’re caring for.”

Dr.Dirk, who is passionate about teaching and professional development, was impressed by the training opportunities available in Ireland. “I wanted to grow as a GP and share my knowledge with others,” he says. “The practice has been incredibly supportive, offering mentorship and opportunities for continued learning. It’s a perfect environment for professional growth.” He also values the vibrant social life in the area, from music festivals to art exhibitions, which have made it easy to settle in and feel at home.

All three GPs agree that moving to Ireland has brought them not only professional satisfaction but a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.  For those looking to practice medicine in a way that prioritises patient care, professional independence and personal wellbeing, moving to Ireland as a GP is a decision worth serious consideration.
